Travel & Tourism Collection

It’s the season for travel and tourism, even in the world of collectors. If it comes to areas of interest, three upcoming events should be on your itinerary.

1) Vintage travel posters will cross the auction block at the Swann Galleries on August 4. Ads for resorts and beaches – visit Antibesfly to Hawaiicruise to Bermuda-appear in dazzling designs. Travel posters have become increasingly popular among collectors over the past decade, driving prices up from hundreds to thousands at auction.

2) The upcoming Biblio Virtual Book Fair, running August 4-7, will focus on “The Great Outdoors”, so booksellers will list books and ephemera dealing with travel, exploration, mountaineering , sports and other outdoor activities.

3) At the PBA galleries on August 11, a selection of guides and maps intended for tourists will be sold. If the west coast is your destination, there is Colton’s Traveler’s and Tourist’s Guide to the Western States and Territories (1857); Crofutt Transcontinental Tour Guide from 1873; a map of San Francisco from 1915; and a 1923 automobile map of Northern California. On the east coast you will find a rare 1901 tourist guide to the East and Hudson rivers. And for international travel, offerings include a 1951 Ceylon (Sri Lanka) “pleasure map” and a 1973 automobile guide that takes readers through Moscow and western Ukraine.

It just so happens that just as we were about to post this, a Catalog “Travel” arrived in our McBride Rare Books inbox.
