Tourism agents receive training in defensive tactics – Love FM

The Belize Tourism Board is leading the charge to improve safety in the industry through training in defensive tactics. Fifty officers from Belize City, Caye Caulker and San Pedro will undergo two-day training sessions with the House of Shotokan Karate Academy instructor. Capacity building training sessions focus on skill building exercises to help refresh the knowledge of tourist police officers on the self-defense strategies used in the line of duty. The Belize Tourism Board’s capacity development manager said the goal was to improve the quality of agents across the country.

Abil Castañeda, Capacity Development Manager, BTB: “In terms of how to engage with the person they’re engaging with, how to talk to them. It’s not just about security tactics, but how to engage and approach someone, what to say, how to say it. But if it’s a situation that escalates, the training also teaches them how to defuse that part of that particular process from that particular event.

Training sessions also include theoretical training that educates them on proper application, legal rights and effective communication.
